BETHESDA, Md., April 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has partnered with the nonprofit Give an Hour to support a three-day event titled "A Celebration of Service," taking place at the Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C., April 6-8, 2014. The event aims to raise awareness of the challenges veterans and their families face as they reintegrate into their communities, and to help educate the next generation of mental health professionals about the veteran community.
The events will kick off with a service project sponsored by Lockheed Martin on Sunday, April 6, 2014, during which more than 30 Lockheed Martin employees will join representatives from Give an Hour, other sponsors and partners, and event participants to landscape and paint a transitional housing facility operated by Veterans on the Rise. Veterans on the Rise provides supportive housing for veterans, including case management and counseling services to individuals and families who might otherwise face homelessness.
"We are proud to partner with Give an Hour and honored to be part of 'A Celebration of Service,'" said Jim Byrne, associate general counsel and chief privacy officer at Lockheed Martin, and Give an Hour board member. "We have a shared duty to ensure our transitioning veterans and their families experience successful reintegration into our communities, and Give an Hour is doing tremendous work to address this need."
Give an Hour provides free mental health services to service members, veterans and military families through a network of volunteer providers. "A Celebration of Service" includes an all-day educational conference for mental health professionals on April 7, with panels to address different aspects of the military and veteran communities. A recognition ceremony for U.S. Senators Richard Burr and Debbie Stabenow, and Marine Corps veteran Brendan O'Toole will take place on April 8, followed by a performance of the play Water by the Spoonful at the Studio Theatre.
In addition, Lockheed Martin Vice President of Ethics and Sustainability Leo S. Mackay, Jr., will participate in a panel discussion on integrating veterans into the workplace. Moderated by TIME magazine's Mark Thompson, the panel will also include senior representatives from Aetna, United Healthcare and Booz Allen Hamilton.
