Decade Software trained over 150 government environmental health professionals at the Decade Software Annual Training Conference in October 2012. President, Kevin Delaney explained, "For 17 years, our annual training event has provided a platform for government agencies to work together alongside system designers and subject matter experts, utilizing technology to progress their methods."
The conference featured 32 educational training sessions, keynote presentations, and an awards ceremony that recognized agencies for their innovative projects to increase efficiency. Nominees demonstrated impactful reports and creative uses of their systems. This year's winners included the following health departments: El Paso County (Colorado), Ventura County (California), San Mateo County (California), Placer County (California), and San Bernardino County (California).
Keynote Speaker Dean Peterson, Director of Environmental Health in San Mateo County, promoted "SMART collaboration" in a county-wide ban of single-use plastic bags. Keynote Speaker Geraldine Cole, Finance Manager for Seattle King County, showcased Seattle's online business services through the EnvisionConnect Portal by automating many processes and eliminating redundant data entry. Cole boasts, "Since the Portal's launch, the county has already facilitated $5 million in e-commerce transactions for online permits. Through the EnvisionConnect Portal, a quarter of the fee revenue received so far in 2012 reached the bank without touching human hands."
Environmental health agencies protect public safety by regulating and permitting businesses and activities that may impact public health. Examples include retail food (food safety), hotels and other multi-tenant housing, swimming pools, underground tanks, drinking water, solid waste, sanitary septic systems, body art, hazardous materials, and air quality.
