Living Oceans Foundation Webcast live from the Galapagos on World Oceans Day
LANDOVER, Md., June 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation celebrates World Oceans Day today with two live webcasts from their research ship in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.
Both webcasts will be shown on the Foundation's website. www.livingoceansfoundation.org
The Foundation will reach out to high school students with an educational webinar conducted by Chief Scientist Dr Andrew Bruckner. At 10:00 a.m. EDT he will speak from the Galapagos islands on current coral reef research and why the Galapagos are a unique place to study how climate change impacts corals.
Later in the day, at 3.30 p.m. EDT the Foundation will present a live conversation with 'Her Deepness' Dr. Sylvia Earle. Dr. Earle will connect with the coral research team on the ship, the Golden Shadow, from a live audience at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. The Foundation will give an update on their current studies on rare coral reefs at the north of the Galapagos archipelago. Dr. Earle and the science team will also discuss how the Galapagos species respond to El Nino driven temperature fluctuations and why that may give us hope for corals' ability to be resilient to future climate change.
His Royal Highness, Prince Khaled bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia, the Foundation's chairman said, "We are delighted to be sharing information about coral reefs from such an iconic place." He added, "This is a day to celebrate the beauty the ocean offers us, to highlight some of the problems marine creatures are facing, and to have hope for the future of coral ecosystems."
