Liulishuo at the Future of Go summit in Wuzhen: DeepMind Co-Founder gives the Chinese innovation a thumbs up

The forum opened on May 23 with the first game in the three-part "man-vs-machine" Go series between Google's upgraded AlphaGo and Ke Jie, the world's top Go player. Two of Liulishuo's co-founders, CEO Yi Wang and Chief Scientist Hui Lin, as well as its Chief Algorithm Engineer Dr. Yi Sun who joined Liulishuo early this year, watched the whole game unfold together. Dr. Sun, being the first Chinese student of Jurgen Schmidhuber, the "father of artificial intelligence" had a particular interest in the outcome. After the game concluded, Demis Hassabis, CEO and co-founder of DeepMind, had a long discussion with the Liulishuo team and praised Liulishuo's achievements in education and technology. Both parties are looking forward to deeper cooperation in the future.

On May 24, the second day of the summit, many "big names" in artificial intelligence joined the Future of AI Forum, including Hassabis, Executive Chairman of Alphabet Eric Schmidt; and Jeff Dean, legendary senior engineer of the Google Brain Team. Before the forum, Yi Wang discussed future opportunities in education with Dean, who thought highly of Liulishuo's business model. During a presentation shortly afterwards, he pointed out the limitations extant in the modern education industry, saying that students can never share the same amount of resources from one instructor among a class of 30 people. One instructor can only reach a limited number of students effectively, with limited time devoted to each pupil. As such, "AI + Education" could become an exciting formula in the future.

That afternoon, Yi Wang also gave a presentation about some potential applications of AI in education at the Future of AI Forum. Yi Wang pointed to three major deficiencies he sees in the traditional education systems: low efficiency, high cost, and severe inequality of resource distribution. AlphaGo may have defeated Chinese Go player Ke Jie, but the next breakthrough AI product may well come from China.
