WASHINGTON, Nov. 3, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tune in now to AFGE's "Inside Government" to learn about toxic exposure at the Bureau of Prisons (BOP), a march in support of federal employees and more! The show, which originally aired on Friday, Oct. 29, is now available on demand.
Bill Meek, vice president of AFGE Local 607, which represents workers at the Federal Correctional Institution in Elkton, Ohio, discussed the details of a recent Justice Department Office of Inspector General report analyzing the toxic exposure. The report found that staff and inmates at several BOP facilities have been exposed to toxic metals including cadmium and lead. The exposure occurred in the electronic waste recycling program run by the Federal Prison Industries – also known as UNICOR. The report concluded that the UNICOR recycling program did not value worker safety and environmental protection.
Also on the show:
- AFGE Local 1812 Vice President Niurka Fernandez-Arteaga's fight to save jobs at the Broadcasting Board of Governors' Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB). OCB has initiated a reduction-in-force amid allegations of nepotism and cronyism.
- Dov Randel, international advisor to the Israeli Union of Government Employees, who spoke about strengthening relations between U.S. and Israeli unions.
- GovLoop Founder and President Steve Ressler, who addressed GovLoop's march in Washington on Oct. 30 in support of federal employees.
