LISC Announces $100,000 Grant to Fuel Development of Tamaqua Community-Driven Safety Program
TAMAQUA, Pa., Oct. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) has awarded an $100,000 grant to Tamaqua Area Community Partnership (TACP) for the continued development and implementation of a community-driven safety initiative that organizes residents and businesses around issues of blight and crime.
At an event today here at Lehigh Carbon Community College, LISC announced the grant as a 12-18 month investment that would advance TACP's partnership with local police and support broader efforts for revitalization throughout the community.
"Safety is fundamental to every healthy community," noted Tina Brooks, LISC executive vice president for programs, who made the announcement. "Our goal is to help Tamaqua residents ensure that they can live, work, do business and raise their families in a community without the blight of vandalism or the threat of violence hanging over their heads."
The grant continues an effort launched earlier this year, as TACP convened representatives of LISC's national Community Safety Initiative program, local police, neighborhood watch programs, the Chamber of Commerce, the Main Street program, the Elm Street program, the judicial system and interested citizens on how to construct an effective local response to safety concerns.
"Our community safety partnership is part of our comprehensive effort to support TACP's work surrounding affordable housing and economic development throughout this community," said Elise Hoben, executive director of Rural LISC.
Since 2007, Rural LISC has invested $3.4 million in Tamaqua through TACP. "Threats to safety impact everyone—homeowners, renters, businesses and schools all suffer in an environment in which safety is a question. TACP is working closely with stakeholders throughout the community and the Tamaqua police to develop a program that responds to specific local needs," Hoben said.
