The award-winning LiquiGlide technology was initially developed in the Varanasi Research Group laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and has generated an enormous amount of attention from its origins in 2012, receiving more than 3,000 inbound inquiries and having more than 100 internationally renowned consumer goods companies visit its offices in the first year.
LiquiGlide, Inc., founded in late 2012, initially focused on packaging and processing applications in the consumer goods industry. The benefits of LiquiGlide for consumer brands include: highly differentiated product and packaging innovation, and increased efficiencies and less waste in processing lines, resulting in significant cost savings. LiquiGlide's coatings also provide immense benefits directly to consumers, including: improved ease of use, reduction of waste, and consistent dosage.
"Consumers love LiquiGlide," said Carsten Boers, LiquiGlide president, about consumer research conducted by LiquiGlide and its clients. "The more the consumers like a product, the more they appreciate LiquiGlide coatings for that product – they immediately understand that it allows them to get everything they paid for. Many want to buy the product with our coating on the spot – and they're willing to do it at a significant premium."
LiquiGlide started releasing its customized coatings to clients in late 2013. The first coating will be used commercially within a few months in a processing application, and the first consumer products with LiquiGlide coatings are expected to hit shelves in early 2015, likely for products including toothpaste, mayonnaise and paint, followed by lotions, conditioners and shampoos. LiquiGlide is expecting to sign a series of exclusivity agreements with partners in many industries, providing unique opportunities for clients to differentiate their products.
"Typically, a new technology takes seven to ten years to get from the lab into the market," said LiquiGlide inventor and CEO Dave Smith. "Our technology is exceptional in its versatility and ability to integrate into existing systems. We will have our first commercialization in less than two years' time."
LiquiGlide is starting to form partnerships to expand beyond the consumer goods industry, into the medical, industrial, agrochemical, and oil and gas industries, and beyond. The applications of LiquiGlide's technology are far-reaching and impactful, and the company is committed to bringing LiquiGlide coatings to the world as fast as possible.
