LIPA and National Grid Select eMeter for Smart Grid Project
EnergyIP and Energy Engage Chosen to Support Future Deployment of 1.1 million Meters
SAN MATEO, Calif., May 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- eMeter, a leader in Smart Grid management software, today announced that the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and its agent National Grid Electric Services LLC, have selected eMeter's EnergyIP® meter data management platform to serve as a part of the foundation to deploy a Smart Grid framework across the electric service territory, and eMeter's Energy Engage online consumer portal to allow LIPA customers to better manage their energy use by providing web-based usage data and enhanced information to provide new long-term benefits.
"LIPA is eager to begin implementing eMeter's EnergyIP and Energy Engage to improve our existing metering and billing processes and provide improved service to our 1.1 million customers," said LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michel D. Hervey. "eMeter's proven track record in the utility industry and its history of successful deployments of Smart Grid meter data management systems make them an ideal partner for LIPA."
eMeter's EnergyIP platform will consolidate multiple smart meter and legacy meter reading systems and integrate to LIPA's customer information for billing and synchronization with the smart metering systems. The eMeter Energy Engage web portal will provide delivery of energy information to consumers and integrate into LIPA's website. Over time, LIPA will leverage the EnergyIP platform in developing the essential business processes necessary to deploy over 1.1 million smart meters. Additional applications that could be implemented on the platform include Validation, Estimation, Editing and Time of Use Rates, advanced billing and outage event management.
"We are proud to add LIPA to our growing list of partners who are at the forefront of bringing the Smart Grid to life around the world," said Gary Bloom, eMeter CEO and President. "Bringing together both the back end technologies as well as the consumer engagement component to their existing Smart Grid projects will further demonstrate the value of LIPA's efforts and help yield more promising results as they continue the project."
The implementation of eMeter's EnergyIP and Energy Engage will be utilized in conjunction with LIPA's Smart Corridor Project being funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Demonstration Grant from the Department of Energy. The Smart Corridor Project is a collaboration between LIPA, Stony Brook University and Farmingdale State College to create the first Smart Grid on Long Island. The project was created to integrate a suite of Smart Grid technologies, including smart meters, distribution automation, distributed energy resources and electric vehicle charging stations.
