Founded in 1858, Linfield is home to more than 1,700 students – from 29 states and 27 countries – at the 189-acre residential main campus in McMinnville, an hour from Portland and an hour from the Pacific Ocean. Linfield's Portland campus, affiliated with a hospital and medical center, is home to 350 nursing majors.
Academic expectations are high at Linfield, and intellectual curiosity thrives. Students benefit from an 11:1 student-faculty ratio; there are rich liberal arts and science opportunities in 48 majors. The intimate environment allows for fewer than 20 students in 70% of classes. The probability of a student graduating in four years is 35% higher at Linfield than at the University of Oregon and 99% higher than at Oregon State University.
Posting a winning football record for an incredible 60 consecutive years, the Linfield Wildcats reached the NCAA Division 3 Football "Final Four" this past December. Linfield's baseball team won the D-3 national championship in 2013. The softball team was national champion in 2007 and 2011. Linfield offers opportunities in 40 clubs and organizations (14 devoted to music), in fraternities and sororities as well as in 19 varsity sports.
The SAGE Tuition Rewards® program strongly encourages families to save for college – and attend a private college. Financial organizations (529 Plans, banks, credit unions, employers, insurance firms, mutual funds, etc.) use the program as a value-added benefit, enabling clients and employees to earn rewards points that students can redeem for guaranteed minimum scholarships – tuition discounts – at any member college in the consortium. Rewards points are similar to frequent flyer miles and are submitted at time of application. (1 point = $1.00)
Member colleges absorb the scholarships, which are "capped" at one full year's tuition (spread evenly over four years) and can be included with other aid, as a marketing cost to effectively reach out to a wider audience than an individual college could on its own.
A new national initiative with Guardian Dental Insurance is making the SAGE program available to 390,000 families in California, Oregon and Washington. Participation in the SAGE program is free to families and to colleges. The 357 consortium member colleges benefit by free marketing access to participating students (once they reach 9th grade). For colleges, it is not easy to find families interested in private higher education. Students are typically well-qualified academically and financially.
SAGE Scholars was founded in 1995 to promote the values and affordability of private higher education by Dr. James B. Johnston, former director of admissions and financial aid at the Wharton Graduate School, University of Pennsylvania.
"Through our unique Tuition Rewards program, SAGE has brought together families, schools and investment companies for nearly two decades to create college-funding solutions," Dr. Johnston said. "SAGE membership can assist in finding desirable applicants across America. With Guardian coming on board and its huge impact on students in California and the Pacific Northwest, we're looking to add more member colleges on the West Coast."
SAGE strongly promotes its member colleges – and the benefits of private higher education – to participating families.
Drexel University was the most popular member college in 2015, receiving 216 rewards statements, correlated with applications. Other colleges very popular with SAGE students in 2015 included Arcadia University, Bradley, Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Duquesne, La Salle, Messiah, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology, Susquehanna, University of Dayton, University of San Diego, University of Tampa, Valparaiso and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Of SAGE seniors who submitted rewards points to a member college in 2015 (at time of application), the average distance from home to campus was 164 miles. On average, students sent 1.7 applications to member colleges.
