BRIDGEWATER, N.J., June 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- At the fourth annual Additive Manufacturing with Powder Metallurgy (AMPM) conference, a Linde-based university researcher will present results showing the effects of different atmospheric gases on parts built from 316L powder during laser powder-bed fusion production. The conference, June 13-15, is co-located with PowderMet 2017 at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. "Nitrogen Atmosphere Effect on 316L Parts Built by Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process"
Camille Pauzon, Ph.D. candidate at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden, will present research comparing the properties of parts built from 316L powder during Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) in atmospheres of nitrogen and argon gases at different purity levels. Atmosphere control is vital to ensuring precise AM fabrication, particularly in DMLS processing. The results will show the effects the choice of gas and its quality on the bulk chemical composition, microstructure and resulting mechanical properties of the final machined part.
The presentation was co-authored by Pierre Forêt, Applications Technology Manager, Linde AG, in conjunction with Pauzon and Professors Eduard Hryha and Lars Nyborg of the Chalmers University of Technology. Pauzon is participating in an 18-month research stay at Linde Gas, Unterschleissheim, Germany, where she studies the effects of gas mixtures for powder bed fusion systems.
