LINCOLN PARK, N.J., Nov. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Lincoln Park Bancorp (OTC Bulletin Board: LPBC) (the "Company"), the holding company of Lincoln Park Savings Bank, announced net income of $218,000, or $.13 per share, for the quarter ended September 30, 2014, compared to net income of $132,000 or $.08 per share, for the quarter ended September 30, 2013. The increase in net income of $86,000 was primarily due to an increase in net interest income and partially offset by an increase in real estate owned expenses, provision for loan losses and an increase in income tax expense.
Net interest income after provision for loan losses increased by $127,000 or 11.6% during the quarter ended September 30, 2014 to $1.2 million, compared to $1.1 million for the three months ended September 30, 2013. The results in this area were primarily due to an increase of $3.5 million in the average balance of loans. Interest income on securities increased by $154,000, or 16.7% to $1.1 million, for the quarter ended September 30, 2014, compared to $923,000 for the same period ended September 30, 2013. This was due to an increase of $11.2 million in the average balance of securities and an increase of 13 basis points in the yield on securities.
Interest expense on total interest-bearing liabilities decreased by $11,000, or 2.1% to $524,000 for the quarter ended September 30, 2014, compared to $535,000, for the quarter ended September 30, 2013. The primary reason for this increase was that for the quarter ended September 30, 2013, the company recognized a loss of $7,000 on the sale of securities available for sale.
Non-interest expenses increased by $8,000 or 0.86% to $935,000 for the quarter ended September 30, 2014, compared to $927,000 for the quarter ended September 30, 2013, primarily due to increases in expenses related to salaries and employee benefits, equipment expenses, and other miscellaneous expenses. Salaries and employee benefits increased by $37,000 or 12.0% to $346,000 for the quarter ended September 30, 2014, compared to $309,000 for the quarter ended September 30, 2013. This increase was due primarily from the addition of new employees. Directors' compensation increased by $15,000 for the comparable periods, due to additional meetings during the quarter.
Income taxes increased by $42,000 to $103,000 for the three months ended September 30, 2014, compared to $61,000 for the three months ended September 30, 2013, due to an increase in pre-tax income of $128,000.
