NEW YORK, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM TechWeb's Light Reading (www.lightreading.com), the largest research-led media company serving the global communications marketplace, today announced the availability of the second report in a two-part series that details an extensive test of Cisco Systems Inc.'s mobile IP network infrastructure by Light Reading and the European Advanced Networking Test Center AG (EANTC).

"Cisco, indeed, showed it is capable of delivering to operators the piece parts to build a next-gen mobile network that is scalable and shows state-of-the-art functionality," writes Carsten Rossenhovel, EANTC's Managing Director, in the conclusion to Part Two of the test results. "The mobile core tests of the ASR 5000, acquired from Starent Networks, are particularly noteworthy because it shows Cisco's position in the mobile core is rock-solid."
The scale of the network agreed upon by EANTC and Cisco was sufficient to cater to more than 1.5 million active mobile subscribers across more than 4,500 emulated base stations. This marks the first public test ever performed with Cisco's ASR 5000 mobile gateway, which came from Cisco's acquisition of Starent Networks Corp. Also, this test includes an evaluation of Cisco's brand-new CRS-3 flagship carrier router including pre-production 100-Gigabit Ethernet equipment.
"What's really interesting about the second part of this test is the emphasis on both the mobile core functionality as well as the look at applications-serving and deep packet inspection capabilities of the network," says Phil Harvey, Light Reading's Editor-in-Chief. "These are huge parts of the mobile network puzzle that operators need to have a handle on so they can make money, while providing consumers a significant upgrade in mobile broadband capabilities."
The test was a result of a nine-month testing effort, the largest published test of the new 4G mobile networks, involving Light Reading, EANTC, Cisco engineers. Also participating were suppliers of equipment for the test bed that simulated a 1 million subscriber metropolitan area network, including gear from Bridgewater Systems which was used to test the mobile core network control plane and Spirent which simulated the end-to-end mobile network traffic usage.
