Light Reading & EANTC Test Cisco's Mobile IP Network
The world's largest public test of carrier network equipment demonstrates the challenges of scaling today's mobile networks
NEW YORK, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM TechWeb's Light Reading (www.lightreading.com), the largest research-led media company serving the global communications marketplace, today announced the availability of the first report in a two-part series that details an extensive test of Cisco Systems Inc.'s mobile IP network infrastructure by Light Reading and the European Advanced Networking Test Center AG (EANTC).

"Cisco showed that they truly support all mobile network generations – from GSM (2G) and current-generation UMTS (3G) to Long Term Evolution (LTE), the next generation of radio technology," writes Carsten Rossenhovel, EANTC's Managing Director, in the introduction to Part One of the test results. "Without exaggerating, our nine-month exercise was by far the largest and most in-depth public, independent, third-party test of mobile infrastructure vendor performance ever."
The scale of the network agreed upon by EANTC and Cisco was sufficient to cater to more than 1.5 million active mobile subscribers across more than 4,500 emulated base stations. This marks the first public test ever performed with Cisco's ASR5000 mobile gateway, which came from Cisco's acquisition of Starent Networks Corp. Also, this test includes an evaluation of Cisco's brand-new CRS-3 flagship carrier router including pre-production 100-Gigabit Ethernet equipment.
"Mobile networks around the world were built to handle basic phone calls and now consumers are demanding they support video, data, and everything else a smartphone can throw at them," says Phil Harvey, Light Reading's Editor-in-Chief. "This aggressive test of Cisco's mobile IP network shows that network operators can effectively scale their technology to match the data demands of the modern mobile consumer. What's more, this program is open and we encourage other mobile IP infrastructure suppliers out there to step up and be tested."
