Life's Good with Virtualization: LG Electronics on the Forefront of "Smart Working"
LAS VEGAS, Aug. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics (LG) announced today that it will be participating in VMworld® 2011 as a Platinum Sponsor of the annual event organized by VMware. This is part of the company's efforts to strengthen its partnership with the virtualization and cloud industry leader.
LG's extensive participation at VMworld 2011 is a concerted, company-wide effort by the world-class manufacturer, led by its mobile communications (MC) and home entertainment (HE) business units. It signals the push by the electronics giant towards extending its reach into and presence within the enterprise sphere, beyond its traditional stronghold in consumer electronics and home appliances.
Through a strategic collaboration with VMware, virtualization technologies have been adapted across LG's mobile phones, tablets and zero-client monitors in a bid to produce enterprise-ready devices, products and business solutions for companies and their employees globally. LG transforms the idea of "Smart Working" into reality, offering solutions to the challenges faced by diverse stakeholders within the enterprise.
Addressing the enterprise mobility agenda
LG and VMware have successfully integrated mobile virtualization technology from VMware into LG smartphones, a celebrated effort culminating from the strategic partnership made with VMware in December of 2010. This integration enables enterprises to manage corporate assets on LG devices using the Mobile Virtualization Platform (MVP) and the recently announced VMware Horizon Mobile platform.
"With LG's enterprise-ready smart devices, enterprises can now extend their computing platform into the mobile space and further increase return on their IT investments already made," said Ki S. Kim, corporate vice president and head of global enterprise solutions business at LG Electronics. "Smart mobile devices with the added benefit of real time and location/context awareness can enable business processes to be more dynamic, effective and efficient, resulting in productivity increase across the organization."
These devices, termed "P&B devices" at LG, short for "Privacy and Business," leverage VMware's mobile virtualization platform to enable IT organizations to achieve data security, application and device manageability, while fulfilling IT governance requirements. Employees are also able to maintain their privacy and LG brand affinity on a single device.
"In the past few years, end users have voted overwhelmingly for freedom and choice in their computing devices, while CIOs are trying to maintain control of the data and applications that go onto those very same devices. VMware and LG share a common vision to provide users with the flexibility to access their work and personal data from the same device," said Parag Patel, vice president, Global Strategic Alliances, VMware. "We are excited by the innovations we are bringing to market with LG, enabling end users to have their freedom while empowering CIOs to easily manage and control an environment full of different mobile devices. We look forward to our continued partnership with LG to deliver innovative end-user solutions that deliver on this vision of smarter working."
Fulfilling enterprise IT infrastructure needs
LG also offers a solution to enhance work environments by deploying virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) using VMware View™ through its ultra-secure zero-client Network Monitor P-Series (N1910LZ). VDI offers increased security, helping IT managers to protect confidential data that is vulnerable to hacking, viruses and leaks. "Zero-client" means that there is no need for a CPU, hard disk drive and operating system for a P-Series user. In addition, by managing IT infrastructure in one centrally located place using VMware View, the P-series increases operational efficiency and minimizes cost for enterprises.
"The P Series Network Monitor solution helps reduce high costs associated with maintaining a multi-computer setting," said Y.K. Cho, senior vice president, Commercial Displays, LG Electronics USA. "Designed specifically for enterprise, finance, healthcare and SMBs (small- and medium-size businesses), LG Network Monitors P Series helps to maximize budgets and transform a static workspace into an interactive, engaging atmosphere that's easy for integrators to install and for end-users to employ."
Beyond enterprises into homes
LG's ambitions for smarter living transcends across offices into the personal domains of its consumers worldwide with home automation via LG mobile devices. Consumers' lives are enhanced as they leverage upon these devices for intuitive communication with LG smart home appliances, including refrigerators, washing machines and flat-screen televisions, enabling greater control and convenience.
