Life360 Names Steve Corona Head of Platform Engineering
SAN FRANCISCO, April 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Life360, the leading location and communication app for families, today announced that Steve Corona, who most recently served as CTO of Twitpic, has joined the company as Head of Platform Engineering. In this newly created position, Corona will lead Life360's efforts to scale its back-end and build out the app's API as the company rapidly expands its user base and integrates its products with partners in other industries. Life360 recently surpassed 33.5 million registered users, making it the largest location-based check-in app on the market.
"Steve is a really exciting hire for us," said Chris Hulls, co-founder and CEO of Life360. "Our user base is expanding extremely quickly as families increasingly rely on Life360 to keep them connected. As we integrate the Life360 app into connected cars, home security systems and other relevant partners, Steve's background in API development and management of large volumes of data will be extremely valuable."
"I'm really excited about the potential in the Life360 Platform and API," said Corona. "Always-on geo for your family, without killing your battery, is a technology that developers have been waiting for to build the next generation of smart applications—the ones that seem straight out of a Sci-Fi movie. This is going to be a fun challenge, and I look forward to leading the Life360 Platform at this phase in the company's growth."
Prior to joining Life360, Corona served as CTO of Twitpic, where he spent four years scaling Twitpic to handle millions of users and billions of transactions per month.
Life360 is free to download on Android and iPhone platforms. Life360 users stay in touch with family throughout the day via a private family map and chat stream, regular check ins, and panic alerts if needed. Life360 recently announced several new features, including a geo-fencing feature called "Places" that allows users to designate locations on the map and receive an automatic alert every time a family member arrives at those designated locations. Also new is Life360 Premium, which gives users access to a 24/7 Live Advisor, roadside assistance, unlimited use of Places, expanded location history, $100 in stolen phone protection, and location lookups for non-smartphones. Life360 Premium is $4.99 per month, and covers the entire family.
Last month, Life360 welcomed BMW as a strategic, long-term investor in its mobile app. Life360 is partnering with BMW to develop convenient ways for families to safely stay connected with each other when they are on the road. Life360 has a variety of integration partnerships in development with companies in multiple industries.
