General Wood served over 36 years as an officer in the U.S. Army. As a commander, he led soldiers at all levels of responsibility from platoon to division. As a staff officer, his experience ranged from tactical level with coalition forces in combat through Army level in the aftermath of 9/11 to the national level in the National Security Council during the Reagan administration. In his last assignment on active duty, he was the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Joint Forces Command where he led the daily activities of this joint command as it performed joint experimentation, training, capability development, and force deployments.
Since retirement from the U.S. Army in January 2009, General Wood has devoted his attention to the establishment of a consulting practice, Star Strategies Group, LLC. He successfully provided strategic planning, security market assessment, business development and leader development services for a range of small and large firms in the commercial and defense markets.
General Wood holds degrees from the United States Military Academy (BS), the University of Chicago (MBA), and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (Master of Military Art). He was selected as a White House Fellow in 1984 and served in the Reagan White House on the National Security Council. He also was a fellow at the Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University. While in the Army, his secondary specialty was Operations and Research Analysis (ORSA).
"When John Dubia announced his retirement, we knew we needed a successor that embodied many of John's characteristics," said Kent Schneider, President and CEO, AFCEA International. "We needed someone who is a visionary, a scholar and an experienced flag or general officer with a diverse background that included international, joint, inter-agency, planning and policy, as well as a solid understanding of the application of C4ISR, IT and cybersecurity. We found all of that with General Bob Wood. He brings a wealth of experience and is well respected throughout the force structure. We are looking forward to working with Bob to support the AFCEA membership and the defense community."
