CARLSBAD, Calif., June 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Progenitor Biologics®, LLC, the manufacturer and distributor of the cutting-edge anti-aging skin care products, DefenAge® Skincare, is proud to announce a new peer-review scientific article published in the May/June 2018 issue of PRIME Journal that highlights the use of defensins as a new revolutionary therapy for skin rejuvenation.
The article examines the role of stem cells in the pathophysiology of aging, acknowledging their incredible anti-aging potential, while also pointing out that not all stem cells are created equal. The authors conclude that one specific stem cell type - LGR6+ cells that is located within our skin and is considered our skin's master stem cells - offers a new, highly-specific, targeted path for reversing skin aging. The key to activation of the LGR6+ cells is the defensin peptide.
Whereas current skin treatments utilize retinols, growth factors, botanics and other commonly used cosmetic ingredients to indiscriminately stimulate aged and damaged skin cells to "work even harder than they worked before," target-specific defensins mobilize and activate relatively undamaged, "fresh" and "young" LGR6+ cells, which are not as directly exposed to UV radiation, environmental insults and reactive oxygen species.
"Since aging is so intimately tied to stem cell integrity, one of the major goals of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine is how one can use these cells to reverse aging and the associated dysfunctions that come with it," says lead author and dermatologist Amy Forman Taub, M.D., Lincolnshire, IL.
"Defensin is a tiny natural peptide. Our body employs the antimicrobial function of defensins on a daily basis. The newly-discovered 'reprogramming' activity of defensins can be utilized to treat skin deterioration and damage from UV exposure, inflammation and oxidative stress—all harbingers of skin aging," says Kim Pham, co-author of the article from the School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin-Madison, one of the leading world-renowned centers of cutting-edge stem cell research.
Age-Repair Defensins® is the key proprietary ingredient in DefenAge. In a 6-week pilot study of the DefenAge skin care line, researchers observed a global improvement in the reduction of visible wrinkles and pore sizes, improvement of skin tone and evenness and decreased skin oiliness in 22 participants. To confirm these findings, researchers conducted a 12-week multi-center, placebo-controlled, double-blind study of the DefenAge skin care system with 45 participants. The study validated previously observed clinical data and concludes that the defensin-containing skin care regimen globally improves the appearance of aging skin (Taub, Bucay, Keller et al, J Drug Dermatol, 2018, 17(4): 426-441).
"There is no doubt that the defensin-based technology provides a new avenue for a targeted cure of skin aging. Scientifically backed DefenAge is extremely well accepted by aesthetic professionals as well as end-user consumers. More than 35,000 units have been sold to date. Consumers are very excited with the results that they see after using DefenAge. They also commonly comment on how many compliments they get for their look after using DefenAge," said Progenitor Biologics' CEO, Nikolay Turovets, PhD.
