LGBTQA+ Community May Struggle More With Student Loan Debt, Notes Ameritech Financial
ROHNERT PARK, Calif., July 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- For many members of the LGBTQA+ community, that is approximately 9 million people strong, life isn't easy. A combination of social stigma and often some lack of familial support can cause a great deal of stress and when it is on top of the stress of handling student loan repayment, it can be a heavy burden that some feel might be insurmountable. Ameritech Financial, a document preparation service company, may be able to help student loan borrowers apply for federal repayment programs that have the potential to ease some burdens financially, but that is merely a Band-Aid on a larger problem.
As social creatures, people thrive off of support and being a part of a community. When cut off from that, LGBTQA+ borrowers may struggle to apply for scholarship programs for various reasons, may have to put off a college education or take out more loans to cover college costs. Then after the loans have been taken out and when repayment begins, LGBTQA+ borrowers often have to deal with discrimination in the workforce. Struggling to get a job and then dealing with lower wages may make it feel impossible for members of that community. "Trying to live a life just like everyone else, but often being treated as a second-class citizen, being ostracized or being treated like they have a debilitating mental illness, LGBTQA+ people often have a rougher path ahead of them than others, but too often the people around them are quick to discredit them or turn a blind eye," said Tom Knickerbocker, executive vice president of Ameritech Financial.
A lot more work has to be done on a national scale to make it so that LGBTQA+ members are not being left behind socially and facing near-constant discrimination of some kind. For federal student loan borrowers of the LGBTQA+ community struggling with repayment, there is the option to apply for federal income-driven repayment programs, which Ameritech Financial may assist with. "We at Ameritech Financial want what is best for borrowers so that they can live life to the fullest and we aid people as best we can by assisting them in applying for federal repayment programs," said Knickerbocker.
