LG Electronics Patent Victory In Federal Court Another Blow To Taiwanese Non-Practicing Entity

WASHINGTON, June 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics chalked up another victory in its three-year defense against multiple patent infringement actions brought by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), a non-practicing entity established by the Taiwanese government to assist domestic companies against their non-Taiwanese competitors.

Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed LG Electronics' complete victory at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) in Certain Devices for Improving Uniformity Used in a Backlight Module and Components Thereof and Products Containing Same (337-TA-805).

Representing another blow to the Taiwanese entity, the Federal Circuit affirmed that LG Electronics products do not infringe the claims of ITRI's asserted patent and that ITRI did not have the necessary domestic industry standing required to bring an action before the ITC.

In 43 months of litigation covering more than two dozen ITRI patents, not one asserted claim has been found valid and infringed by LG Electronics.

Since November 2010, ITRI has brought nine patent actions against LG Electronics in the United States and China asserting 28 patents against an array of LG products, including televisions, monitors, air conditioners, optical disc drives and mobile phones. Only three of the 28 patents asserted by ITRI against LG remain to be decided.
