MENLO PARK, Calif., Jan. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Lex Machina, a LexisNexis company, today announced the first state-specific expansion of its award-winning Legal Analytics® platform covering the Delaware Court of Chancery, the nation's preeminent forum for the determination of corporate and contractual disputes. No other jurisdiction has a comparable level of influence in corporate legal matters.
Lex Machina's Delaware Court of Chancery module is the 10th expansion of its Legal Analytics platform. The new module encompasses over 6,000 cases filed electronically since October 26, 2012, providing valuable data-driven insights and trends in case resolutions and findings across a broad spectrum of constitutional provisions, statutes and case law. The module illuminates the track records of opposing counsel and parties, and accurately chronicles the behaviors and decisions of the court's judicial officers. Organizations can also use the new analytics module to identify the best law firms to represent their interests locally. The Delaware expansion is another major step in fulfilling Lex Machina's promise to bring Legal Analytics to every facet of federal and state law.
"The importance of the Delaware Court of Chancery cannot be overstated, as decisions made in this one court can influence judicial behaviors and decisions on corporate and civil matters across the entire country," said Karl Harris, president and COO of Lex Machina. "Senior litigators at major corporations and top national law firms need to understand the nuances of practicing law in this court to offer the best possible legal counsel and support to clients incorporated there. Lex Machina's Legal Analytics for the Delaware Court of Chancery provides attorneys with data-driven insights to help them create successful litigation strategies in this highly influential jurisdiction."
Significant Technology Enhancements to Court Data
As opposed to federal practice areas that leverage the centralized PACER database for all case documents, the Delaware Court of Chancery uses a proprietary electronic filing system that includes information such as case title, civil action number, judicial officer, parties, counsel and documents. Lex Machina's Attorney Data Engine and expert legal editors enhance this basic data in a variety of ways, including correcting errors ranging from simple spelling mistakes to complex data problems; normalizing data on judicial officers, parties, law firms and attorneys; extracting records of law firms and attorneys not found in the basic data; tagging and categorizing cases; annotating case resolutions, damages and rulings; and more.
As part of the product development process, Lex Machina interviewed senior litigators from top law firms and major corporations with expertise in the Delaware Court of Chancery in order to better understand its particular analytics use cases. The product team incorporated the experts' feedback directly into the new offering, adding new features and unique tags such as Field of Law and Nature of Claim, as well as tags such as case resolutions, damages and rulings, which are similar to federal modules.
