Leviton Recognizes National Electrical Safety Month
Electrical Products Leader Provides Electrical Safety Tips for the Home and Workplace
MELVILLE, N.Y., May 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Throughout May, Leviton, a global leader in the electrical solutions industry, is recognizing National Electrical Safety Month through an awareness and education campaign focused on assisting homeowners and businesses with identifying and addressing potential electrical hazards.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 53,000 electrical home structure fires occur each year, claiming more than 450 lives, injuring more than 1,400 people and causing more than $1.4 billion in property damage. The Leviton campaign highlights the importance of electrical safety with their "Top 10 Electrical Safety Tips" and related electrical solutions that can help make a home or jobsite safer. The tips include:
- Installing Tamper-Resistant (TR) receptacles, devices including shutters to allow plugs but block other objects, helps protect young children from the dangers of exposed contacts in electrical outlets
- Installing Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) receptacles in areas that have potentially greater exposure to water, such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, garages and outdoors, to help guard against electric shock
- Utilizing weather-resistant while-in-use outlet covers for outdoor outlets for safer use of tools and equipment in inclement weather
"Leviton is proud to join the Electrical Safety Foundation International in its efforts to educate the public on electrical safety during National Electrical Safety Month and throughout the entire year," said Jay Sherman, Director of Marketing, Residential Products. "At Leviton we strive to create multi-faceted electrical solutions for our customers including products that make the daily use of electricity safer both at home and on the job. We provide education on the many ways advances in electrical technology can help protect them, their families, their homes and their worksites from the dangers electrical hazards can present."
Leviton's "Top 10 Electrical Safety Tips" is supported by a strong portfolio of safety-related products. Leviton's residential line of GFCI receptacles, surge strips and tamper-resistant receptacles are designed to help protect people and their belongings.
