Leving's NBC African-American History Special to Air Sunday
CHICAGO, March 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Noted historian and Fathers' Rights Attorney Jeffery M. Leving is featured in NBC Chicago's (Ch. 5) African-American History special airing this Sunday, March 18 at 8:00am. The special will be hosted by NBC's Art Norman highlighting Leving's recent donation of a first edition of Frederick Douglass' My Bondage and My Freedom to Chicago State University as well as several artifacts of historical significance that Leving has made available to the public through his online resource http://ourblackheritage.com. Leving will be joined by Dr. William Martin, Associate Director and Lecturer at Chicago State University.
The historical documents shown in the special will include an original lithograph of South Carolina's Ordinance of Secession from the Union, known as the Confederate Declaration of Independence, which was captured by the 102nd Regiment of United States Colored Troops. It was then signed by the proud soldiers and brought back to Michigan as a war trophy. Highlighted as well is an original enlistment document signed by a slave with an X to become a soldier in the Union Army to fight against the perpetuation of slavery.
"I want to make history available to everyone as it was intended, without alteration or editing, and let the readers decide for themselves the meaning and context of these true and accurate historical documents," said Leving of his commitment to maintain his website as a free resource for anyone wanting to learn more about history – as it was.
Leving founded http://ourblackheritage.com as an African-American tribute and resource site featuring an expansive collection of rare and unique historical documents and artifacts available in their unaltered state to students, educators, and the general public with the goal of making visible and accessible real and unsanitized history.
Attorney Jeffery M. Leving is an author as well as historian with his new book How to Be a Good Divorced Dad coming out in April, which garnered praise from President Barack Obama and an endorsement from Francis Cardinal George of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Leving has been a long-time collector of historical documents and artifacts with the goal of preserving history in its original form for generations to come.
