"In 2011, we plan to continue the trajectory we've established through early customer wins with content providers like ABC, Big Ten Network, CBS Interactive, National Geographic and PBS by extending our business into content distributors," said Sam Blackman, CEO and co-founder of Elemental Technologies. "The leadership and experience Kevin brings to our board, coupled with investment from a market leader in virtual computing solutions, will help guide our anticipated growth."
"Increasingly, content distributors are taking the traditional broadcast experience to any Internet-connected device," said O'Hara. "The timing is right for Elemental to expand its reach into large-scale deployments where the need for high performance, low cost video processing and conversion is growing exponentially."
O'Hara is a co-founder of and currently serves as executive chairman at Troppus Software Corporation, a provider of customer care and technical support solutions for service providers. Prior to Troppus, O'Hara co-founded Level 3 Communications (Nasdaq: LVLT) where he spent ten years and ultimately served as president, COO and director while growing annual revenue to greater than $4 billion.
Prior to co-founding Level 3, O'Hara was with Metropolitan Fiber Systems (MFS), where he ultimately served as president and CEO of MFS Global Network Services. MFS was sold to WorldCom in 1996 for approximately $14 billion. In addition, O'Hara currently serves on the boards of Integra Telecom, a privately held communications company, and RigNet, Inc., a communications service provider primarily targeting the oil and gas industry in over 30 countries around the globe.
Elemental names O'Hara to its board as it welcomes long-time customer Citrix Systems as a strategic investor. Elemental and Citrix have previously worked together on technology to ensure a rich user experience of virtualized, high-performance applications such as computer-aided design software. The two companies recognize the potential value in bringing additional functionality to video applications in a virtual environment, including program guides and cloud-based rendering.
"Citrix desktop virtualization solutions are being rapidly adopted by enterprises and are transforming the way end-users experience their desktops wherever they are located, using any device," said Andy Cohen, senior director of strategic development at Citrix. "Given the rapid explosion of video usage by desktop users, we see the promise that Elemental's technology holds for more efficient delivery of video to the millions of virtual desktops in use today in enterprises around the world."
