ATLANTA, Jan. 15, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Bill Cowher, the coach who led the Pittsburgh Steelers to victory in Super Bowl XL and current studio analyst for "THE NFL TODAY ON CBS," will be honored with the coveted Pat Summerall Award at the Legends for Charity® Dinner on Thursday, January 31, 2019, in Atlanta. The dinner, benefitting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®, will be held at The Marriott Marquis, Downtown Atlanta, the NFL's weekend headquarters.
In Cowher's 15 seasons as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team won eight division titles and made 10 playoff appearances. Cowher led the Steelers to the Super Bowl twice, winning once. He is the second coach in NFL history to reach the playoffs in each of his first six seasons as head coach, a feat previously accomplished by Paul Brown. Cowher retired as head coach of the Steelers on January 5, 2007, 11 months after winning Super Bowl XL. He becomes the 14th recipient of the Pat Summerall Award, named in honor of the late legendary broadcaster known for many years as the voice of the NFL.
"It is a true honor to receive the Pat Summerall Award. Pat was an icon. He was a SPECIAL broadcaster and even better person," said Bill Cowher. "I grew up watching him and it is humbling to be in the elite company of the previous recipients. I look forward to sharing the evening with you in Atlanta, the home of Super Bowl LIII."
Since its inception more than 14 years ago, Legends for Charity has raised more than $6 million for St. Jude. Each year the Pam Summerall Award is given to a deserving sports broadcaster. This year, ESPN anchor Hannah Storm will serve as the event emcee, becoming the first woman to hold that role.
"Pat Summerall was an amazing man who had an incredible heart for the children of St. Jude and we are thrilled to honor Bill Cowher in that same spirit with the award this year," said Richard Shadyac Jr., President and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. "The support we receive through events like Legends for Charity enable us to ensure that families never receive a bill from St. Jude for anything – not for treatment, travel, housing or food—because all a family should worry about is helping their child live."
KBR, a global provider of professional services and technologies to Government Services and Hydrocarbon Sectors, returns as the championship sponsor of the dinner. KBR has approximately 34,000 employees worldwide, customers in 75 countries, and operations in 40 countries.
