Angelus will be engaging with students at the Fresher's Fair on 17 September, showing them information films and making them more aware of the harms and unpredictability of substances such as Clockwork Orange, Pink Panther and AMT. The founder of Angelus, Maryon Stewart's has a special relationship with Sussex. Her daughter was a 3rd year star student studying molecular medicine at Sussex when she died after an accident with GBL following an awards dinner in April 2009.
Hester was also a cheerleader and every year student cheerleaders organise a Pink Night to raise money for the Foundation.
Maryon Stewart said, "Sussex University is very much close to my heart and always will be. We are delighted to be working in partnership with them on prevention and doing all we can to keep students safe. Last year there was a record number of new substances (81) and we know students are particularly vulnerable to seeking new experiences. We are determined to get the word out that these substances are dangerous and potentially deadly. Unfortunately many young people get the idea that these substances are relatively safe because they are legal. They are not. They are high risk. Our students will now have the opportunity to make the wiser choice around legal highs."
Notes to editors:
- Maryon Stewart lost her daughter to GBL and established the Angelus Foundation.
