Legal-Bay Reports Arrest of Chief of NY Jail Officers' Union, Just One Day After 5 Rikers Officers Are Convicted in Brutal Beating of Inmate
Lawsuitssettlementfunding.com, a Case Funding Firm, says Norman Seabrook, the leader of the union that represents NYC correction officers, was arrested on fraud charges just one day after 5 Rikers officers were convicted of all charges in a brutal beating of an inmate.
EAST ELMHURST, N.Y., June 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Legal-Bay LLC, The Lawsuit Settlement Funding Company which operates lawsuitssettlementfunding.com, reported today that Norman Seabrook, the leader of the union that represents NYC correction officers, was arrested on fraud charges. His arrest comes just one day after 5 Rikers officers were convicted in the 2012 brutal beating of an inmate.
According to The NY Times, "The charges against the union leader, Norman Seabrook, and a second defendant, Murray Huberfeld, a hedge-fund financier, stem from the first major criminal case linked to one of several corruption investigations focused on the campaign fundraising of Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat." Officials have said that Seabrook was taken into custody around 6am by agents of the FBI.
Seabrook's sudden arrest comes just one day after 5 Rikers correction officers were convicted of all charges in the July 2012 brutal beating of inmate, Jahmal Lightfoot. The charges include attempted assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree, falsifying business records, official misconduct, and the most serious count, first-degree attempted gang assault. Lightfoot has said that they almost beat him to death. The conviction of the 5 officers has been quite a victory and makes a statement: just because you have a badge doesn't mean you're above the law.
Controversy has been surrounding Rikers Island for some time, as there have been talks of closing it down for good. With a high number of incidents of prison rape, police brutality, prison injury, wrongful arrests, and wrongful convictions, Legal-Bay stands ready to assist those who have been a victim of "The System."
Chris Janish, CEO of Legal-Bay, commented on the recent news, "The timing of the arrest of Norman Seabrook is the end of an era at Rikers Island, the Tombs, and the rest of NYC jails, at a time when a high profile correctional officer police brutality case went against the city yesterday and will cost the city more money in a possible large award. We remain committed to supporting victims of police brutality, wrongful imprisonment, and prosecutorial misconduct throughout the country from New York to California."
Public awareness has been growing on these cases, as well as police brutality, wrongful imprisonment, and incidents where victims have sustained injuries or even died at the hands of law enforcement.
