LeClairRyan Launches Technology and Innovations Practice Team
Diverse roster of veteran attorneys advises clients on the gamut of tech-related issues--from cyber security to driverless cars and the Internet of Things; new blog reflects team's expansive focus.
ATLANTA, Dec. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- LeClairRyan has launched a new cross-office, cross-disciplinary practice team focused on ramping up service for companies that sell—or are heavily dependent upon—technology.
"The national law firm's Technology & Innovations team gives clients access to attorneys with broad experience in tech-related issues, including those associated with transactions, litigation, IP, communications, regulations/compliance, deal-making and more," said Co-Leader Janine Anthony Bowen, a veteran technology attorney as well as an engineer and technologist.
"The core of the practice is made up of lawyers with partner-level experience from some of the largest law firms in the United States and globally, who transitioned to LeClairRyan because of its nimbleness and reputation for innovation," said Bowen, a shareholder in LeClairRyan's Atlanta office. "The team continues to grow in depth and size as it expands its focus."
In tandem with the launch of the new practice team, LeClairRyan's former cyber security and data privacy blog, Information Counts, has been renamed Law & Technology. The blog now covers the gamut of issues, trends, headlines and client concerns related to technology as shared in periodic posts by members of the team. It is available at https://lawandtechnologyblog.com/.
"Among the client matters handled by the team are those related to emerging technologies and innovations such as drones, wearables, autonomous vehicles, digital currencies/Blockchain technologies and the Internet of Things," said Co-Leader John Hutchins, a veteran tech lawyer and shareholder in LeClairRyan's Atlanta office.
Broadly speaking, other types of client matters handled by the team include:
- Technology transactions
- Technology and Internet litigation
- Privacy and data security
- Mobile
- e-Commerce
- Big data
- Fintech/payments
- Healthcare IT
- Emerging companies
The team's focus is not merely on pursuing the largest clients in tech, noted Hutchins. "Our aim is serving the needs of clients at all levels of the market, helping the C-suite manage their companies' tech law challenges," he said. "We have experience with technology transactions of every variety imaginable and have litigated and arbitrated technology-related disputes all over the country and internationally."
The team is well versed in IT outsourcing transactions, hosted services, cloud computing (SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, etc.), licensing, systems procurement (including government contracting), and project implementation, Hutchins said. It also helps clients deal with threats such as ransomware, data breaches, online fraud schemes, digital brand abuse, piracy and related online security issues.
Tech clients include, but are not limited to, cloud services providers, consumer and business hardware and software providers, vendors (including content providers), developers, infrastructure and network suppliers, outsourcers, data-warehousers, e-commerce sites, and mobile commerce providers. With respect to heavy technology users, the team serves clients across multiple industries, including in education, energy, entertainment, financial services, government, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, media, professional services, retail, transportation and more.
In today's increasingly digital economy, the appropriate management of tech and the data processes that tech relies upon is crucial, Bowen noted. "The rate of change is accelerating at a dizzying pace," she said. "The landscape businesses face today was scarcely imaginable even 10 years ago. It includes not just mobile phones, but also mobile payments, banking, media, retail, transportation, education and healthcare, to name a few. Our Technology & Innovations team gives clients access to trusted advisors who live and breathe tech and thrive on the prospect of what comes next."
