Lebanese Representative to UN to Be Honored for Service at Gala in New York
NEW YORK, April 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lebanon's ambassador to the United Nations, Nawaf Salam, is set to receive an award for his public service as part of an upcoming gala in New York on April 30th, 2010. Salam will receive the honor for his years of service as a diplomat from Lebanese American University (LAU), which will hold the event.
Nawaf Salam is the head of Lebanon's mission to the United Nations, taking part in the decision-making process at the international organization and expressing the Lebanese position on issues of the day to the global community as a result. Ambassador Salam is also the representative at a time of increased influence for Lebanon, after it recently won a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
Ambassador Salam has earned two doctoral degrees: one in history from the Sorbonne and another in political science from Sciences-Po, as well as a master of laws degree from Harvard Law School. Before his assignment to the United Nations, Salam has practiced law and spent many years in education, teaching and researching at universities in the U.S., France and his native Lebanon since the late 1970s. His experience and education has also allowed him to write prolifically about legal and political issues since the 1980s; along the way, Ambassador Salam has made the most of his expertise to benefit his colleagues and students.
His impressive body of work and education gained the attention of the Lebanese government, which convinced him to leave his last post as the chair of AUB's political science department and become a diplomat. In 2007, he became the Republic's permanent representative to the United Nations.
