Lebanese American University to present two lectures on Long-Term Unemployment and Temporary Marriage at New York Headquarters and Academic Center in Midtown Manhattan
NEW YORK, Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lebanese American University (LAU) will present a pair of lectures at the LAU New York Headquarters and Academic Center, 211 East 46th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues) on October 30 and November 6.
On Thursday, October 30, 6:00-8:00 p.m., LAU distinguished alumnus and leading economist Dr. Rand Ghayad will be speaking on "The Jobless Trap in the U.S." The talk focuses on how America's million-plus long-term unemployed are caught in a vicious cycle: their increasingly lengthy jobless spells make them increasingly unattractive applicants. It emphasizes the role of government in helping the most vulnerable in society and the options that are left before a dip into a depression.
Dr. Ghayad is an associate with The Brattle Group and a research advisor to the Institute for Career Transitions at M.I.T Sloan School of Management. He was invited by the White House to prepare a best practices guideline for recruiting the long-term unemployed, resulting in an executive order to ban discrimination against unemployed job seekers who have been out of work for a long time.
On Thursday, November 6, 6:00-8:00 p.m., Dr. Shahla Haeri will discuss her book, "Law of Desire: Temporary Marriage in Shi'i Iran." The presentation will highlight the Islamic Republic's attempt to remove the veil of secrecy surrounding temporary marriage by hailing it as one of the most "brilliant" laws of Islam: a legally appropriate alternative venue for gender association and sexual relations; a modern yet moral substitute for the "decadent" sexual freedom prevailing in Western cities.
Dr. Shahla Haeri is an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Boston University. She is the author of No Shame for the Sun: Lives of Professional Pakistani Women, and has produced a video documentary entitled, Mrs. President: Women and Political Leadership in Iran, focusing on six women presidential contenders in Iran in 2001."
The lectures are free and open to public. Receptions to meet the speakers will be held prior to the lectures. Due to limited seating, kindly RSVP by contacting Jasmine Jaime at [email protected] or (212) 203-4333.
