As a learning program based on ability, rather than age or grade, Kumon Instructors across North America are helping children learn without limits by inspiring them to reach heights they never imagined possible. It is common to see children in Kumon Centers studying math and/or reading material two to three years above their school grade level.
Kumon North America recently released inspirational student stories showcasing their path towards 'J by 6,' which in Kumon, is the study of advanced algebra and critical reading of high school texts (Level J) by the sixth grade.
"One of the founding principles of the Kumon Method is to make the study of high school math and reading easy," said Dominique Ciccarelli, Ed.M., education spokesperson for Kumon North America. "This is accomplished by instilling in students the skills and mindset for self-learning. By inspiring students to reach 'J by 6,' they are prepared to excel in high-school material and become well on their way to completing the Kumon Program."
Algebra has often been referred to as the "gateway" course with research showing the positive correlation between the early mastering of algebra and college graduation and employment income. In the same regard, students studying above grade level in reading are more likely to graduate from high school and go on to attend and graduate from college.
Achieving 'J by 6' is an impressive feat, as the concepts mastered are not a walk in the park. In the Kumon Reading Program, students have learned a more sophisticated understanding of passage structure, improved critical reading ability by analyzing literary characters, and deepened their understanding of a writer's intentions. The Kumon Math Program enables children to do fractions, equations, functions and graphs, and then proceed onward to calculus. The further along students advance through the Kumon Curriculum, the better they will likely do in school.
