Leapfrog Awards Top Marks for Patient Safety to Northwestern Medicine Hospitals
Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital receive "A" letter grades
CHICAGO, May 7, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Northwestern Medicine® has been recognized for its high level of patient safety, receiving an "A" letter grade in the spring 2014 Hospital Safety Score from The Leapfrog Group for both Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital. An "A" letter grade is the highest score possible assigned by the nonprofit patient safety group. Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Lake Forest are among only a third of the more than 2,500 hospitals that were evaluated nationally to receive the prestigious "A" letter grade in the spring 2014 scores, recognizing them as two of the nation's safest hospitals.
The Leapfrog Group assigns scores to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals as part of its Hospital Safety Score initiative. The nonprofit group's scoring system uses publicly reported measures that are designed to track and reduce preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections and then assigns individual hospitals with a letter grade based on their performance. The goal of the Hospital Safety Score initiative is to provide the public an easy method for making informed decisions about where they choose to receive their health care.
"We are proud that both Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Lake Forest hospitals have once again been recognized with an 'A' letter grade on the Hospital Safety Score," said Gary A. Noskin, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer at Northwestern Memorial. "This achievement demonstrates our organization's continuing commitment to provide high quality care in the safest healthcare environment possible for every patient we serve."
According to the Leapfrog Group, the Hospital Safety Scores are compiled under the guidance of an eight-member Leapfrog Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, which is comprised of some of the nation's leading experts on patient safety. The Hospital Safety Score uses a total of 28 measures of hospital safety data to evaluate a hospital's overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable infections, injuries, and errors. The Leapfrog Group's panel includes representatives from Stanford University, University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins University.
Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Lake Forest share a longstanding commitment to a culture of quality, safety and service. By aspiring to the highest standards for quality and patient satisfaction with collaborative focus on process improvement, both institutions are committed to delivering care that is safe and without error.
