JACKSON, Miss., March 25, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- When it was raining outside at Jenice Luckett's home, her grandchildren would say, "Grandma, it's raining in your living room!" All she could do to keep the rain from destroying her home was to put pots on the floor. A tornado had damaged the roof on her 50-year-old home, and she didn't have the means to repair the damage. Ms. Luckett, 60, was living on disability because of an injury to her back and carpal tunnel syndrome, and didn't have extra money for the repairs.
Then her daughter, a customer at BankPlus, told her about a program offered by BankPlus and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) called the Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is offered by FHLB Dallas through its member institutions, like BankPlus. The program provides grants to assist income-qualified, special-needs homeowners with necessary home repairs and modifications.
A grant of more than $5,500 from BankPlus and FHLB Dallas provided Ms. Luckett with a new roof.
Mark Ouellette, first vice president and director of Affordable Housing at BankPlus said, "I am delighted to work with FHLB Dallas each and every year. By giving members access to meaningful programs like SNAP, we are able make a significant, visible impact on the lives of our neighbors and communities. I was thrilled to learn that after a customer heard about our program, she shared the information with her mother, and the end result is a much-needed new roof for Ms. Luckett."
Ms. Luckett no longer worries about her roof caving in. "This is just a blessing. They replaced my roof and some boards, and there is no more leaking," said Ms. Luckett.
Since SNAP's inception in 2009, nearly $9.2 million has been awarded in grants through FHLB Dallas member institutions to assist 1,846 families across FHLB Dallas' five-state District of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Texas.
"FHLB Dallas is honored to support our members' efforts to make real, tangible differences in their communities," said Greg Hettrick, vice president and director of Community Investment.
