Leading Eye Supplement Manufacturer Macular Health Becomes Lunovus Under Private Equity Acquisition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Nov. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- One of the eye industry's leading providers of nutritional supplements and vision care products - Macular Health - was recently acquired by a private equity group, who will change the parent company name to Lunovus and expand their product lines beyond eye care in early 2016, according to Jeffery McAnnally, president and co-founder of Macular Health.

Operations for Lunovus will remain in Birmingham, AL where McAnnally and renowned retinal specialist John O. Mason, III, MD founded the company in 2003 to provide alternative treatments for patients suffering from Dry Eye Syndrome, Macular Degeneration, Blepharitis and other common eye diseases and conditions.

Both McAnnally and Dr. Mason, Retina Specialist at the UAB Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, will remain actively involved with Lunovus and retain large equity ownership positions within the new company. McAnnally would not disclose specific financial data on the acquisition, but values the 12-year-old Macular Health company at 15 million dollars.

Lunovus will continue to provide a full line of Macular Health's nutritional supplements like AREDS, genetic specific vitamins and dry eye formulations.  They have also produced two of the most novel products in the eye care industry: Blephadex™ and the MacuStrip™ AREDS 2 vitamin on a dissolving strip. Blephadex is used in the treatment of Blepharitis and Demodex mites, while the dissolvable MacuStrip is a supplement for patients with Macular Degeneration.
