"We often talk about how to 'win over another's love' or to 'find love' when it comes to relationships with one another," said Melissa O'Neill, LCSW, director of clinical operations at Timberline Knolls. "Yet, we rarely talk about what it means to develop a loving relationship with oneself. Often this has many of the same components and barriers as cultivating meaningful relationships with others."

O'Neill offers the following advice on how to celebrate ourselves on this important day:

  • Spend quality "me" time. Do things that you enjoy doing.
  • Treat yourself with dignity and respect. Learn to engage in kinder, gentler self-talk.  Discover how to practice self-compassion.
  • Be honest with yourself. Learn to practice self-awareness including mindfulness and meditation practices in order to be honest with yourself in a nonjudgmental way.
  • Connect to what you "love" about yourself. Connect to your values in action, practice gratitude toward yourself, and learn to give yourself recognition and appreciation.

O'Neill states that a relationship with ourselves will have up's and down's, just like those we have with others. It's a lifelong journey. It's important to have patience. Practicing self-love is a marathon, not a sprint or a quick fix.
