LCA Announces Appointment of the Honorable Clay Shaw (R-FL), to Its Honorary Board of Directors

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) announced that The Honorable Clay Shaw (R-FL), will be joining  LCA's  Honorary Board of Directors.

He joins The Honorable Chuck Hagel (R-NE), former U.S. Senator, Co-Chair of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board, Professor of Foreign Policy at Georgetown University and the University of Nebraska; J. Steven Hart, Esq., former LCA President and President & CEO, Williams and Jensen; and Jane Reece-Coulbourne, Executive Director, Reagan-Udall Foundation.

Congressman Shaw was elected to Congress in 1980 and was re-elected to 13 consecutive terms.  Shaw, an attorney, first served on the Judiciary Committee where he concentrated on anti -narcotics legislation.   In 1988 he won assignment to the Ways and Means Committee where his concentration expanded to seniors, health and welfare issues.  Shaw was best known for his efforts at reforming the welfare system.   

Fenton Ambrose continued, "Congressman Shaw was a leader on so many legislative fronts -- including lung cancer policy – during his tenure in the House of  Representatives.  He was a staunch advocate for critically needed federal research funding for screening and treatments.  He led bipartisan efforts to petition the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to make lung cancer a research priority.  He introduced first-ever legislation to provide coverage for lung cancer screening tests for certain high-risk individuals under the Medicare Program.  And he called upon Congress to officially recognize November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month."
