Law School Admission Council Honors Marquette University Law School with Fifth Annual Diversity Matters Award
NEWTOWN, Pa., June 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Marquette University Law School won the Law School Admission Council's (LSAC) Fifth Annual Diversity Matters Award for exceptional programming. The award is designed to recognize law school programming that encourages racially and ethnically diverse students to consider law as a career.
The awards were announced at LSAC's Annual Meeting and Educational Conference in Asheville, North Carolina on May 31, 2014. The University of Denver Sturm College of Law earned the second place award, while the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law received the third place award.
The Diversity Matters Award is part of LSAC's DiscoverLaw.org initiative, which supports programs aimed at increasing diversity in law school and the legal profession, where ethnic and racial minorities are often underrepresented. Law schools are encouraged to host events that demonstrate to high school, community college, and early college students why the world does need another lawyer. The Diversity Matters Award is given to the law school that demonstrates the highest level of outreach each year. This year, Marquette was one of two law schools that conducted five events. The school received additional points for the high attendance level at its events, exceptional website promotion, and the number of students who ultimately registered to receive additional information about legal education through DiscoverLaw.org.
According to Kent D. Lollis, LSAC's Executive Director for Diversity Initiatives, "Promoting diversity is a core value of the Law School Admission Council. The percentage of lawyers from racial and ethnic groups is just over 10 percent, which is very low. Marquette law school sponsored outreach programs that were creative, inventive, and reached the largest number of students from diverse backgrounds."
