The Fourth Annual Law Department Operations Survey is a partnership between Blickstein Group, Inc. and InsideCounsel magazine, the leading industry publication for in-house counsel, and is produced in cooperation with Huron Legal. Led by an in-house legal advisory board chaired by David Cambria, senior director, enterprise information management at CDW, the survey provides legal departments with a consistent platform to benchmark themselves and identify emerging trends in legal department management, and better understand how the largest companies are handling department operations.
The survey contains data compiled from many leading corporate legal departments and was designed by an advisory board of legal department operations directors.
"Legal department operations directors are perfectly situated to help guide attorneys and business people through these turbulent times," said Cambria. "They can bring both their legal knowledge and their business skills to the table."
Key findings of the law department operations survey include:
- 68% of respondents are now solely dedicated to law department operations
- 50% of respondents who manage a distinct operations budget report having a budget of at least $6 million
- 25% of respondents now have a salary of $250,000 or more (up from 17%), and only 5% receive less than $100,000, down from almost 19%
- 51% of respondents state that their compensation is affected by law department metrics, up from less than 37% last year
- More than half of all respondents use or would consider using offshore legal process outsourcing
- More than 62% deliver reports to the finance department
- "Driving/Implementing change" and "Identify opportunities for business improvement and cost savings" were listed as the biggest challenges to managing the law department operations function
