RACINE, Wis., May 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- May 4 marks the annual opening of the Laurel Clark Memorial Fountain and the children of Racine, Wis., have a reason to "splash" for joy. Renovations were just completed to bring the fountain up to code to function as a family-friendly splash pad.

"We were delighted to be part of this project for the families of Racine," said Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson. "A great part of summer is spending time together enjoying the warm weather. We're happy to have played a role in making the fountain be a part of that for the community."
Built in 2002 as an interactive water feature, the fountain became a popular spot for visitors to beat the heat. Changes to state law reclassified all fountains as public pools, resulting in the need for significant renovations and water monitoring for it to safely be used as a splash pad. Partnering with the City of Racine, SC Johnson helped fund the improvements, which include a new piping and draining system, a new building featuring public restrooms and updated mechanicals for the fountain, all of which will significantly reduce city maintenance costs.
"It's wonderful when community leaders like SC Johnson step up to help support our local treasures," said Racine Mayor, John Dickert. "The additional amenities help the city more easily maintain the fountain and helps Racine's families make a full day of a summer outing downtown."
In 2003 the fountain was dedicated in memory of Captain Laurel Salton Clark, the Racine native astronaut who lost her life in the space shuttle Columbia disaster on Feb. 1, 2003.
