Latin Trade 500: The 2016 ranking of Latin America's top 500 non-financial companies
MIAMI, June 23, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Optimism is the norm for Latin America's business leaders as they continue to navigate through unfavourable conditions. The most recent Latin Trade 500 ranking shows that the region's top CEOs are putting all their leadership skills and knowledge to the test as they go on the lookout for new opportunities.
The total revenue of Latin America's Top 500 non-financial companies reached $1.88 trillion in 2015, down from the $2.54 trillion in 2014, according to the 2016 edition of the Latin Trade 500.
Last year, Latin American economies and companies were hit by, among others, low commodity prices, a slowdown in China and weak currencies against the dollar.
But some companies posted significant revenue growth. One case is Colombian retailer Grupo Exito with an 11 percent growth.
Other positive results were Femsa (1.1 percent growth) and Bimbo, with 0.2 percent growth in revenue.
The top 500 non-financial companies in the region are ranked in order of their revenues, profits and total assets. Among the sectors are energy, retail, technology, mining, food and beverage, chemical, steel, auto, transport, agriculture, pulp, services and health.
This year's Top 5 of the 10 Profit Kings were Venezuela's energy firm PDVSA ($8.45 billion); brewer AB InBev ($7 billion); Spain's Telefonica ($4.1 billion); AmBev Brazil ($3.1 billion) and Enel ($2.4 billion).
In terms of sectors, the top companies were PDVSA in energy; América Móvil in telecommunications; JBS in food; Wal-Mart de México in retail; Brazil's Vale in mining and Braskem in chemicals, to name a few.
Energy companies unsurprisingly saw their revenues plunge, with Mexico's Pemex posting a 37.2 percent drop; Brazil's Petrobras a 35.1 percent drop and Colombia's Ecopetrol a 42.6 percent drop.
The Latin Trade 500 includes the following separate sub-rankings: Top Companies By Country, Profit Kings and Profit Winners & Losers.
