Latest Unisys ClearPath Software Boosts Mobility, Flexibility and Cost-Efficiency of Dorado Systems
New release of OS 2200 operating environment enhances openness, security and maintainability of flagship line while expanding benefits of new fabric architecture
BLUE BELL, Pa., March 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced a new release of its OS 2200 operating environment for the company's ClearPath Dorado systems.
The new release includes:
- Expanded capabilities for development of new mobile applications and mobile enablement of existing software;
- Enhanced interoperability of ClearPath, Linux and Windows applications across the new ClearPath fabric architecture; and
- Simplified system management to lower maintenance costs and boost security.
"We continue to enhance OS 2200 to provide our ClearPath Dorado clients with an increasingly open, mobile-enabled operating environment," said Rob Cashman, vice president, Mission-Critical Servers and Solutions, Unisys. "This new software release enables clients to capitalize on the power and cost-efficiency of the advanced ClearPath architecture while continuing to enjoy the high performance, stability and security that have made OS 2200 the gold standard for mission-critical computing for decades."
ClearPath OS 2200 Release 16.0 is an integrated, fully tested stack of 110 software products, with many feature updates resulting from direct suggestions by the OS 2200 user community.
Enabling Greater Mobility for Modern Mission Critical Applications
Enhanced capabilities give ClearPath Dorado software developers a wider choice of commonly used contemporary tools to create new applications and modernize existing ones. Release 16.0 supports the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio® 2013 in the ClearPath ePortal for OS 2200 solution, which helps developers web-enable enterprise applications and create contemporary user interfaces on Apple iPhones and iPads, Android devices, Windows Phones and BlackBerrys.
The Hybrid Mobile Application Build Service feature of ePortal for OS 2200 enables developers to create applications that can easily access OS 2200 resources and exploit native smartphone capabilities, such as GPS maps and barcode readers, without needing to master each platform's proprietary language and tool set.
Also, software developers can draw on Unisys' enhancements to the performance and scalability of the widely used Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE) for OS 2200 for larger-scale application development and modernization projects.
Integrating ClearPath, Linux and Windows Applications in a Fabric Architecture
The fabric architecture on the newest generation of Dorado systems links all computing resources and components in a platform combining industry-standard Intel® Xeon® processors with Unisys' secure partitioning (s‑Par®) software and high-speed interconnect technology. The s-Par software creates a partition with dedicated processing, memory and input/output resources for each application workload.
ClearPath OS 2200 applications have long been able to integrate with applications and databases running under the Windows and Linux operating environments through a rich set of industry-standard middleware. The new fabric-based ClearPath architecture enables users to implement those resources – including key components of OS 2200 Release 16.0 – in software as partitions within the ClearPath fabric architecture. All resources can communicate seamlessly over the fabric's high-speed interconnect, speeding up operations while simplifying management of the Dorado environment and reducing associated costs.
The ClearPath OS 2200 QProcessor solution is one key release component that can be implemented as a partition in the fabric for enhanced performance. It provides transparent information exchange between systems in data-center and cloud environments through the widely used IBM® WebSphere® MQ messaging solution.
Simplifying System Management and Maintenance While Boosting Security
Building on the unsurpassed security of the OS 2200 environment, Unisys has refined system management and security capabilities of OS 2200 so IT organizations can reduce maintenance costs – devoting less time to routine operations and more to innovation. Release 16.0 makes it easier to configure security settings and track incidents in Apex, a Web-based product designed to increase manageability of Dorado platforms for non-specialist users in heterogeneous data centers.
In addition, Unisys has further enhanced the "secure by default" feature of OS 2200 – a set of out-of-the-box parameters closely aligned with recognized security best practices. It is now simpler for organizations to comply with government regulations and industry standards, such as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
ClearPath OS 2200 Release 16.0 is available immediately.
