Latest Study Reveals the Most Expensive Airbnb Listings in Every State
Results indicate traveling in style can be costly.
AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In its recent data study, Upgraded Points spotlighted the expenses related to the latest traveling trends in Airbnb accommodations. The growing popularity of Airbnb over hotels has opened a host of options for travelers, so Upgraded Points ranked the most expensive listings for each state.
The Airbnb platform was originally designed for a traveling crowd who routinely seek good deals on lodging. But there remains a population of affluent travelers who prefer to live in luxury. Airbnb has listings which appeal to these travelers, with locations that are sometimes quite extravagant. Moving state by state, Upgraded Points LLC explored those states with the most expensive listings, based on a three-day weekend stay.
The study first sorted the data by searching for a weekend booking in June, selecting for the most expensive Airbnb rentals available for a three-day, two-night stay. For price comparison, Upgraded Points then listed the average monthly rent for an apartment in the same location.
Most Expensive Airbnb Locations in the United States
Some of the results were quite surprising. Places which one might expect to be more expensive, like New York, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard or Washington D.C., did not make the Top Ten Most Expensive list at all. While other locations, like those in New Jersey, ranked among the costliest listings available.
In some of these cases, the price-tag of a single weekend in the most expensive Airbnb could pay months or even years of rent in the same location. For example, unexpectedly, the most expensive Airbnb listing by far was for a specific location in Missouri.
Amenities of High Cost Airbnb Listings
Luxury lodgings through Airbnb listings usually involve travelers having the use of a full house, as opposed to cheaper listings which include only a bedroom or single-person accommodations. These larger estates generally allow use of kitchens, home-spas, tennis courts, swimming pools, access to scenic landscapes, etc. But in contrast, at least two listings for single private rooms carried astronomical fees for travelers who wished to use them.
Other listings, like entire farms, villas, lodges, or even a castle, carry obvious large price tags. But it was the less-obvious single rooms with high costs that were the most shocking. On average, the most expensive Airbnb listings cost the equivalent of nine months' rent in the same area. And just one of those price-tags listed at a breathtaking $24,000 for a three-day weekend.
"Airbnb is largely a venue for those who like to travel in a cost-effective manner. The platform allows those with extra space to rent that space out to travelers coming to the area. So it would seem that cost-effectiveness might be a natural result from such an arrangement. But our study found that some travelers still prefer to upgrade; so we explored what those Airbnb upgrades can ultimately mean for the discriminating tourist. Bottom line? For that kind of luxury, you better break out your credit card," said Alex Miller, founder of Upgraded Points.
