Latest "McCord Report" Examines Higher Education in PA, Impact on Students and Economy
Quarterly Publication Designed To Provide Data On Timely Issues In Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As lawmakers in Harrisburg debate the fiscal year 2011-12 state budget – including funding for higher education – State Treasurer Rob McCord released a report today examining Pennsylvania's support for public institutions of higher learning and other related issues.
Treasury presented the information via The McCord Report, a quarterly publication that offers unbiased information on timely topics affecting the state and its economic health.
"Recently, I have visited a variety of colleges and universities, and I am regularly asked about the importance of investing public tax dollars in higher education," said State Treasurer Rob McCord. "This topic has garnered attention as the General Assembly and the Governor work to develop a budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year. Given this level of interest, I thought The McCord Report should provide some useful background information and statistics on the topic as well as related matters."
The Treasurer explained that this latest edition of The McCord Report also compares Pennsylvania to neighboring states in terms of student debt levels among college graduates, education levels among those at least 25 years of age, and median earnings and unemployment rates among workers based on their education.
The report also looks at the results of the 2010 Census count, state revenues, and drilling activity in Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale region.
This is the third regular issue of The McCord Report. Earlier issues have looked at state revenues, the financial status of Pennsylvania's two largest public pension funds, employment by industry, state debt levels, alcohol sales, and the issue of privatizing Pennsylvania's wine and spirits stores. Treasury issued a special edition in April that further examined liquor sales in Pennsylvania and introduced readers to an online calculator so they could adjust variables associated with privatizing the state's liquor stores to gauge the impact on state revenues.
