Latest Awardee Named in the Steinger, Iscoe, & Greene Latin Heritage Law Student Scholarship
First-generation American and aspiring attorney, Mario Paredes, is $1,000 closer to achieving his goals
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Oct. 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In their practice, the attorneys at Steinger, Iscoe, and Greene are committed to fighting against injustice and systemic disparities. "At present, the Hispanic community is under-represented in the field of law. We've launched the Steinger, Iscoe & Greene Latin Heritage Law Student Scholarship in order to help change that," says firm founding partner, Michael Steinger.
Possessing close to two decades of service to the south Florida community and witnessing how the landscape has changed, the firm put forward this scholarship to make it possible to assist a deserving student in reaching their dreams and impacting the country in a positive way.
Paredes, whose parents came to the United States to seek better opportunities typically worked six, and sometimes seven, days per week to support Paredes and his sister; his mother cleaned houses, while his father worked in a factory, manufacturing airline parts.
Through their example, Paredes learned the importance of work ethic. His parents always stressed to him the importance of creating one's own opportunities, manifesting in him the desire to work diligently in high school. His determination paid off and Paredes was accepted to and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, completed his Master of Education at Harvard, and is now attending Boston University School of Law.
He works to enact social justice within the Boston community by serving as a mentor to immigrant families and helping them on the road to self-sufficiency by instilling the importance of determination and self-reliance.
Though Paredes is open to eventually entering local or state politics post law school, he wants to solidify his understanding of the needs of the community by continuing his ground-level focus on the needs of those whom he serves and for whom he continues to advocate.
Michael Steinger says, "…When we created this scholarship we hoped to identify someone like Mario Paredes. We want to continue to empower leaders like him to reach their full potential and transform our shared communities."
