Because of ideal running conditions the events are building a reputation as among the best in the country for runners to achieve personal goals or even qualify for the iconic Boston Marathon. Both races are conducted amidst the invigorating backdrop of the Carolina pine-lined American Tobacco Trail (ATT). The ATT provides a flat, fast course cushioned for 21 miles with crushed granite screening. The average high temperature for the date (51 degrees Fahrenheit) delivers refreshing running conditions. The marathon qualifies 10 percent of its competitors for Boston.
"Both beginning runners and Boston Marathoners love this event because the course and the climate work in your favor to achieve your goals," says President, Founder and ten-time Boston Marathon Qualifier Kazem Yahyapour. "We have the fastest course in the state and the cool temperatures of spring in North Carolina provide ideal running conditions."
The two USA Track & Field (USATF) certified courses follow the same path for two miles and then diverge as full marathon runners head north and those in the half turn south to enter the ATT. The first two and last two miles of the courses are on paved roads – the rest on the ATT. Runners start from the USA Baseball & Thomas Brooks Park in Cary.
All proceeds will go to the following charities: JDRF, the Wounded Warrior Project, the Red Cross and the Rails to Trails Conservancy. Details about both races including on-line registration and training tips can be obtained at www.tobaccoroadmarathon.com. Cash awards will be provided to overall winners for men and women as well as active military and masters runners. A post-race party will include a massage tent, beer garden and a wide variety of refreshments.
The Tobacco Road Marathon Association is a non-profit organization dedicated with its sponsors to providing financial assistance to its partner charities by channeling the passions of the North Carolina Triangle area's running community into a powerful force for good.
