Las Vegas Surgeon Dr. Samir Pancholi Calls for Medical Tourism Education After Cosmetic Surgery Patient Dies in Thailand
Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Samir Pancholi advocates for increased awareness of international medical tourism in the wake of another tragedy
LAS VEGAS, Dec. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Samir Pancholi, current president of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and medical tourism expert, calls the recent death of a 24-year-old cosmetic surgery patient "a tragic and unnecessary example of why more education and resources are needed for people who travel for surgery."
A young British woman who sought cosmetic buttock augmentation from an uncertified surgeon in Bangkok, Thailand was pronounced dead on the operating table due to complications related to her surgery.
"Many of these clinics are unregulated, unlicensed, and downright dangerous," says Dr. Pancholi. "Surgery patients who go looking for a bargain might be gambling with their lives."
Dr. Pancholi advocates strongly for more education and awareness regarding international medical tourism, which is quickly becoming a dangerously popular option for discounted cosmetic procedures. "Many times people think any doctor can perform cosmetic surgery," he states. "It is important that countries establish strict guidelines to assure the public that the doctors performing their procedures are trained and, more importantly, competent in the procedures they are performing."
On his website, Dr. Pancholi provides a downloadable ebook, Las Vegas Medical Tourism Guide: Traveling for Cosmetic Surgery, for patients seeking safe options within the United States. He routinely discusses both the dangers of traveling outside of the United States for cosmetic surgery and, alternatively, how to approach medical tourism safely and successfully.
"The bottom line is, don't leave the results of surgery to chance," emphasizes Dr. Pancholi. "Arm yourself with knowledge."
In the wake of this woman's untimely death, Dr. Pancholi stresses that "it shouldn't take the loss of a young person to get us talking about the dangers of international medical tourism."
