SAN FRANCISCO, April 27, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Las Vegas plastic surgeon Michael C. Edwards MD, is the new president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). The Aesthetic Society, with more than 2,600 members, is the leading national organization of board-certified plastic surgeons specializing in cosmetic surgery of the face and body. The election of new officers was held on April 27, during the ASAPS 2014 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA, which was attended by plastic surgeons from around the world.
After completing his internship and residency in General Surgery at the David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA, Dr. Edwards relocated to the Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX to complete a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He simultaneously served his country in the United States Air Force for nearly 20 years, with assignments in Europe and the Middle East, achieving rank as a Lieutenant Colonel during his tenure. Dr. Edwards was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) in 1998.
"It is with the utmost confidence and pride that I turn over the reins of the ASAPS presidency to Dr. Michael Edwards. His experience in both the military and the field of medicine give him a unique perspective that will enable him to be considerate, intelligent and forward-thinking as we take ASAPS to the next level and plan for the future," says Jack Fisher, MD, immediate past-president of ASAPS.
An Aesthetic Society member since 2002, Dr. Edwards is currently in private practice in Las Vegas, NV as a partner of Anson, Edwards & Higgins Plastic Surgery Associates. He holds a staff position at Summerlin Medical Center in Las Vegas, NV. His past hospital affiliations and positions included deputy hospital commander, chief of staff at the 47th Air Expeditionary Hospital at Al Jabar Air Force Base in Kuwait as well as chief of surgical services, chief of medical staff and staff plastic surgeon at the Mike O'Callaghan Federal Hospital at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV.
In addition to his role as ASAPS president, he currently serves as a board member of the philanthropic research and educational arm of The Aesthetic Society, the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF), where he also serves as the chair of the Bylaws Committee. Dr. Edwards is very involved in local and national medical societies and is currently president-elect of the Clark County Medical Society and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Edwards is a passionate advocate for patient care and truth in advertising. He recently testified on behalf of a health care provider "truth in advertising" bill in Nevada in March of 2013. He, like many physicians, was concerned about patient safety and knew that the bill would, "help alleviate the 'white coat confusion' that exists in health care settings." The law was passed and went into effect January 1, 2014. It is meant to empower patients with information, so they can make smart choices when it comes to their health care.
"I am honored to be the incoming president of The Aesthetic Society – the most prestigious organization of aesthetic plastic surgeons in North America. I am looking forward to growing our organization and expanding our reach to provide greater quality of care, physician education, patient education, patient safety and the advancement of our sub-specialty of aesthetic surgery," states Edwards.
