Lard by Mangalitsa by Mosefund Is Among the Healthiest Alternatives to USDA-Banned Trans Fats
BRANCHVILLE, N.J., June 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Our lard, from our specially- grown superior heritage Mangalitsa pigs from Mangalitsa by Mosefund www.mangalitsa.com, the nation's largest Mangalitsa pig farm, is higher in monounsaturated fat and lower in saturated fat and is one of the healthiest alternatives to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)-banned trans fats, the Company announced today.
In a ruling announced yesterday the USDA said, "Partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods, are not generally recognized as safe for use in human food," adding, "The FDA's action on this major source of artificial trans fat demonstrates the agency's commitment to the heart health of all Americans."
Commenting on the USDA's ruling, Chris Andersen, Chief Executive Officer of Mangalitsa by Mosefund said, "What started for me as the quest to find the best tasting pork has resulted in the most exciting and gratifying experience of uncovering the most flavorful and healthful pork and lard in the world."
According to independent scientific research by the College of Agriculture of Auburn University, "Mangalitsa meat is considerably higher in monounsaturated, or 'good,' fatty acids and lower in undesirable saturated fats, factors that suggest Mangalitsa meat is healthier to consume."
63 percent of the fat in Mangalitsa lard is unsaturated and the vast majority of that is monounsaturated, which is responsible for lowering LDL ("bad") while leaving HDL ("good") cholesterol levels alone.
As Walter Willett, renowned epidemiologist and nutritionist at Harvard School of Public Health and author of Eat, Drink and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating passionately criticized the food industry's use of trans fats, "The evidence that we accrued really suggests that the type of advice people were getting was not useful but actually dangerous, some people were eliminating the very healthy types of fat that actually reduce heart disease rates."
