Labrador Retriever Remains Long Island's Top Dog

NEW YORK, Feb. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Once again, the Labrador Retriever is Long Island's top dog according to the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2011 ranking of the most popular dogs in the U.S.

"Lookout Labs," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson.  "The Golden Retriever made a strong play for Long Island's top spot by leaping over the German Shepherd to land as second most popular last year."

Notable trends in Long Island's top breeds:

• The powerful and intelligent Boxer entered Long Island's top 10 last year by jumping four places to number seven, while the small yet sturdy Havanese slipped from 10th place to 13th most popular.
• Smaller breeds seemed to fall out of favor last year as the Yorkshire Terrier (number eight), Shi Tzu (number nine), and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (number 10) all took top 10 tumbles.
• The Bulldog (number four), Rottweiler (number five) and Poodle (number six) all made top 10 gains on their quest to become most popular.

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today.  The Beagle made big news by overtaking the beloved Yorkshire Terrier to become the third most popular dog breed, while the Golden Retriever advanced from the fifth to the fourth most popular dog breed.  The Rottweiler also made big news by unseating the Shih Tzu – which had been in the top 10 since 2000. But fans of the Labrador Retriever need not fear: the beloved Lab remained the champ – a spot it has now held for 21 consecutive years – thanks to its well-earned reputation for playfulness and loyalty, and its use as a police and search-and-rescue dog.
