NEW YORK, Feb. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Once again, the Labrador Retriever is Cincinnati's top dog according to the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2011 ranking of the most popular dogs in the U.S.

"The people of Cincinnati must think the Siberian Husky is one terrific dog," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson.  "This hardworking breed entered Cincinnati's top 10 last year by leaping three spots to land in ninth place locally."

Notable trends in Cincinnati's top breeds:

• Rottweilers made news by entering the national top 10 last year, and at number 11 in 2010, the breed looked poised to muscle its way into Cincinnati's top ranks.  But instead fell one place to 12th most popular locally.
• The powerful and intelligent Boxer fell four spots to land in seventh place last year.

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today.  The Beagle made big news by overtaking the beloved Yorkshire Terrier to become the third most popular dog breed, while the Golden Retriever advanced from the fifth to the fourth most popular dog breed.  The Rottweiler also made big news by unseating the Shih Tzu – which had been in the top 10 since 2000. But fans of the Labrador Retriever need not fear: the beloved Lab remained the champ – a spot it has now held for 21 consecutive years – thanks to its well-earned reputation for playfulness and loyalty, and its use as a police and search-and-rescue dog.
