NEW YORK, Feb. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Once again, the Labrador Retriever is Atlanta's top dog according to the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2011 ranking of the most popular breeds in the U.S.

"Look out Labs," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson.  "The English Springer Spaniel jumped 18 spots last year to become ninth most popular locally.  This eager to please breed is ranked 29th nationally, but has a good chance to continue on his quest to become Atlanta's top dog."

Notable trends in Atlanta's top breeds:

• Some of the breeds that typically grace Atlanta's top ten took a tumble last year – the Yorkie dropped one spot to fifth place and the Boxer fell two notches to seventh most popular.
• Atlanta showed some love to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel last year by elevating the breed five places, making it fourth most popular locally.  This elegant and energetic breed is ranked 21st nationally.
• The Beagle, on the rise nationally (up two spots to third), is the 29th most popular dog in Atlanta.

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today.  The Beagle made big news by overtaking the beloved Yorkshire Terrier to become the third most popular dog breed, while the Golden Retriever advanced from the fifth to the fourth most popular dog breed.  The Rottweiler also made big news by unseating the Shih Tzu – which had been in the top 10 since 2000. But fans of the Labrador Retriever need not fear: the beloved Lab remained the champ – a spot it has now held for 21 consecutive years – thanks to its well-earned reputation for playfulness and loyalty, and its use as a police and search-and-rescue dog.
